To help you get the most out of your interior design meeting, we’ve compiled a few simple tips.

How to Prepare for Your Interior Design Consultation

For in-store design consultations, we recommend that you bring in samples of your flooring and fabrics, as well as photos of the space and its dimensions. Although you won’t need to gather these items for an in-home interior design consultation, there are a few things you can do to prepare for your meeting.

Determine Your Goals & Budget

Knowing whether you’re redecorating your sunroom for a real estate flip, or redesigning a family room for many years of enjoyment, can greatly impact the design, so it’s important to establish your goals and communicate them to your designer. Likewise, you’ll need to determine your budget, and consider what you’ll do if your goals exceed it. For example, are you be willing to compromise on the design, or would you prefer to complete the project in stages?

Consider How You Will Use the Space

For you to truly love your space, it needs to be functional, as well as visually appealing, which is why we ask you to think about how you will use the space before your designer arrives. A formal dining room reserved only for holidays and dinner parties will have a distinctly different design than a space where your family gathers to share meals, do homework, and more.

Explore Your Likes & Dislikes

We recommend creating a Pinterest board or compiling 6-10 images of rooms and spaces that you love. This will help you think through what you like and don’t like, without having to put it into words. Your designer can then go through these images with you to clarify what appeals to you about each space, and ultimately define your style and preferences.

Be Upfront About Your Needs

Need a sofa that can withstand spills? A rug that hides pet hair? Patio furniture that’s super low-maintenance? These are things your designer needs to know. This is a judgement-free zone. In fact, the more we know about your personal habits, the better we are able to design a space that truly works for you. The same goes for existing pieces of furniture or accessories that you want incorporated into the design. Remember to have these items on-hand for your designer to see.

Make Sure All Decision-Makers are Present

We bring fabric samples, finishes, books and more with us to your interior design session so we can help you make decisions in real-time. However, that’s not possible if a decision-maker is missing from the meeting. We strongly recommend that everyone invested in the outcome of your project participates in the interior design meeting and assists with major decisions.
